Laptop & Flip Flops is a metaphor for living a location-independent lifestyle.
My name is Alex and I started this website to inspire people to travel and learn languages. I’m a web developer from London, currently living in the sunny south of France. People ask me why I’m here all the time and unlike others who are here for work or for a short period I just tell them “for me, for my life”. I got sick of the London commute very quickly but didn’t have the professional experience to enable me to leave. Once I did, I moved to Australia for a year of freelancing and travel where I was inspired to start learning French and the only way to get better at speaking is by speaking. I decided that a job will not dictate where I live ever again.
I hope to inspire you to travel more, broaden your horizons, and improve yourself by sharing with you my experiences through jealousy-inducing blogs and photos. While I am learning French I will share interesting tid-bits and resources that I find along the way. I also help people improve their English which is very rewarding and as this site develops and matures I hope to add resources for English too.
To give you an idea of the types of activities you will see my blog about here’s a snapshot of the things I’ve done:
- Scuba diving in Fiji
- Bungy jumping, parasailing, and kayaking in New Zealand
- Hang-gliding in Australia
- Lots of day hikes and walks everywhere, notably the Tongariro Crossing in New Zealand
- Wine tours
- Embarrassing myself speaking French
- Vodka and oyster shots in San Diego
You may have heard the term “Digital Nomad” alongside “location-independent”. It’s a lifestyle that is growing very fast, but everyone lives it differently. I hope to hear from as many of you as possible in the comments or through my contact page.
